Last Season
9 goals and 36 assists in 80 games — 45 points at 23:01 a night, plus-17, with 24 penalty minutes. It is the first time since 2018-19 that he has played more than 71 games in a season.
52.9 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 78th percentile, across 1,441 minutes — the most five-on-five ice of anybody on the roster. His ice went 45-36 against an expectation of 58.83-52.33: fourteen goals of scoring did not arrive, and the results were good anyway.
The Finesse Game
A puck-mover first and always. He skates it out under pressure, he changes the angle of an attack with one pass, and 36 assists at even strength and on the power play is the honest measure of it.
179 attempts at a median of 49 feet with 67 per cent from beyond 40 — the shot is a point shot meant to be tipped. 9 goals is around his ceiling and has been for most of a decade.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 200, and he defends with his feet and his stick rather than with contact. He is quick enough backwards to survive a rush he has been beaten on and he does not foul when it happens — 24 penalty minutes in 80 games.
The front of his own net is not where he is useful and the club knows it. He is a defenceman who wants the puck, not the body.
The Intangibles
Eighteenth overall in 2015, 512 games, 304 points, and nine seasons in one uniform — most of them on hockey teams that were not close to good.
The injuries are the story of the middle of his career: four straight seasons under 71 games. Eighty games and a plus-17 at 28 is the version of him the club has been waiting for since the contract was signed.
