Last Season
26 goals and 42 assists in 82 games — 68 points at 18:09 a night, with 13 of the goals on the power play, second on the club only to the captain.
51.0 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 62nd percentile. His ice went 41-39 against an expectation of 43.22-41.54, which is a forward whose results and chances agree — the only one of the club’s top four to whom that applies.
The Finesse Game
The shot is the skill and it is a good one: 192 attempts at a median of 26 feet, 40 per cent of them from inside 20, converting at 13.5 per cent. He finds the soft ice in the offensive zone and arrives there without the puck, which is a harder thing than it sounds.
42 assists says the passing is real too, and on the power play he is the release valve — the man the penalty kill has to account for when it has already committed to Tkachuk in the paint.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 209 and he plays smaller than that. He is not a forechecker and he does not finish checks; 30 penalty minutes in 82 games is a winger who is simply not involved in that part of the game.
He will take a hit to make a play and he does not retaliate. On a roster built out of heavy men he is the one skill forward who is allowed to be light.
The Intangibles
A fourth-round pick in 2017 — 121st overall — who is now 391 games and 293 points into an NHL career, all of it in Ottawa. The minus-80 is a record of the seasons more than the player.
He turned 27 in the spring, has scored between 22 and 28 goals in four straight full seasons, and is exactly what the club thought it was getting three years ago.
