49.7 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 49th percentile. His ice went 30-39 against an expectation of 36.46-36.85 — six goals of scoring missing on a line that was creating exactly as much as it conceded.

The Finesse Game

The hockey sense is the last thing to go and it has not gone. He sees the play two passes ahead, he holds the puck on the half wall until the killing box commits, and 35 assists at 37 is a man whose hands still do what his head asks.

138 attempts at a median of 30 feet, split roughly evenly between inside 20 and beyond 40. The release is quick and the shot is no longer a threat that changes a defenceman’s angle.

The Physical Game

5-11 and 186, and he has never been big. What he has always had is a willingness to go to the middle and take the punishment that comes with it, and at 37 he still does.

18 penalty minutes in 81 games. He does not retaliate, he does not agitate, and he has spent nearly two decades being the smartest man on the ice rather than the heaviest.

The Intangibles

Twenty-second overall in 2006, captain in Philadelphia for eight seasons, 1,263 games and 1,116 points, and a Hart finalist in the season he put up 102 of them.

He came home to Ottawa in 2022 at 34 and has scored 79, 64 and 50 points in the three seasons since. Last spring was the first playoff series of his Ottawa career and the club would not have been in it without him.
