The read
the numbers, and the eyeTwenty-seventh in the league at suppressing chances and 10th in goals allowed — twenty-two goals of goaltending is the whole of the difference.
Who this names 9 of 23 on the roster · 40% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Sebastian Aho, Mathew Barzal, Anthony Beauvillier, Kieffer Bellows, Noah Dobson, Ross Johnston, Scott Mayfield, Brock Nelson, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Ryan Pulock, Alexander Romanov, Robin Salo, Semyon Varlamov, Oliver Wahlstrom.
What the Quant Says
37-35-10, 84 points, 20th in the league. 231 goals for, 24th; 237 against, 10th.
And 29th in attempt share, 24th in chance share, 27th in expected goals against per 60 at even strength. This club was outplayed at five-on-five almost all season.
It finished 3rd in the league in goaltending at plus-22.2 goals saved above expectation. At five-on-five it conceded 160 goals against an expectation of 182.2.
The 10th-best goals-against in hockey came off the 27th-best defensive rate. Twenty-two goals is the entire distance between those two facts and Ilya Sorokin is all of it.
Finishing rated 21st at minus-1.7. The offence has no such rescue: 231 goals is 24th, off the 22nd-ranked chance rate, and nothing in the crease helps with that.
What the Scout Says
Adam Pelech is the finding of this chapter. Every regular forward on the roster took a better share of the attempts with him than without, without exception:
Kyle Palmieri 61.8 with him and 42.4 apart. Zach Parise 56.2 and 46.2. Matt Martin 53.8 and 43.0. Casey Cizikas 49.4 and 39.3. Cal Clutterbuck 50.2 and 43.9. Anders Lee 48.8 and 44.9. Josh Bailey 45.3 and 43.3. Pelech's own share apart from each of them never falls below 47.7.
Seven forwards, seven improvements, on a club that finished 29th in the league in attempt share.
The same test run backwards names the two men who have gone. Zdeno Chara took 44.9 per cent of the expected goals across 1,239 five-on-five minutes and Andy Greene 44.2 across 1,101. Five of Greene's six most common team-mates took a better share of the attempts without him, and Chara's own 44.9 per cent is the lowest of any Islander who played a thousand five-on-five minutes.
Two defencemen, 2,340 minutes, and both off the roster. That is the largest single change to this club and it happened by subtraction.
The roster
No measured season behind two of them: Ilya Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov. Their pages carry an older stat line and a judgment, and nothing from 2021-22.

How they were used
2021-22 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
