Florida’s goaltending came in 3.7 goals better than the chances faced, 14th in the league — a modest figure, in front of a defence that was 2nd in the league at suppressing chances. The regular season is not where he earns it; two consecutive June runs are.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 180, and light, and the game is precise rather than large. He is square, he tracks through traffic as well as any goaltender in the league, and he does not travel further than the puck requires.
The rebound control is genuinely good and it matters behind a club that concedes few chances but concedes them from close range. At 36 the recovery on a second play has thinned slightly; there is no other visible decline.
The Mental Game
Two Vezinas, a decade of playoff failures, a contract that was called the worst in the league for three years, and then two Cups.
What separates him now is that he does not appear to carry a bad goal into anything. That was the exact criticism for a decade and it is no longer available.
The Intangibles
Fifteen seasons, 400 wins, and a late career that has rewritten the whole of the earlier one.
At 36, with the club’s captain out for the season, the margin for error shrinks. This roster has been built to concede almost nothing and to let him handle what arrives, and it will be asked to do it without its best defensive forward.
