This Season So Far
The 2024-25 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
54 games, 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points, 3 on the power play, 46 penalty minutes, 13:23 a night and minus-6. He took 50.6 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 615 minutes, the 57th percentile, and his ice went 30-30 against an expectation of 25.41-24.82.
Five goals above expectation on a fourth line, in a season that began in Chicago and ended here. At 39 the legs are gone and the results are not.
The Finesse Game
82 shots at a median of 12 feet with 65 per cent from inside 20, converted at 14.6 per cent. He is still a net-front player and he is still good at it.
476 career assists in 1,311 games. The hands work in a phone box and the head has always been the best part of him. What has gone is the ability to get to the puck first.
The Physical Game
He clears the front of his own net, cross-checks anybody who stands in front of the other one, and takes liberties when the referee is not looking.
1,426 career penalty minutes in 1,311 games is the second-highest total in this edition, six behind Tom Wilson. He is an agitator and has been for twenty years, and at 39 it is most of what he brings.
The Intangibles
Twenty-eighth overall in 2003 out of Peterborough, nineteen seasons, a Hart and a Cup, and 905 points in 1,311 games. He is the fourth-oldest player in this edition.
He has been to the final in four of the last five seasons, each time with a different club, which is either the most remarkable coincidence in hockey or a thing worth having on the roster.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe two rank him within 8 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.
Both bars are percentiles among the 316 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 65 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2023-24
- The club
- EDM took 56.9% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 50.6% — 6.3 below the club he did it on.
- The role
- Fourth line, 615 minutes at five-on-five — 26th percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryan McLeod | 50.9% | 50.4% | 58.2% |
| Darnell Nurse | 51.8% | 50.1% | 54.0% |
| Cody Ceci | 53.4% | 49.6% | 51.9% |
50.9% together, 50.4% for him apart and 58.2% for McLeod apart. McLeod was better away from him while his own share held, which is a mark against him more than for him.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
