51.3 per cent at five-on-five, the 64th percentile, with on-ice goals of 40-48 against an expected 48-45. 16 per cent shooting is close to his career rate and 36 per cent of his attempts came from inside 20 feet.
The Finesse Game
One of the best pure finishers in the league and it has nothing to do with power. The release is quick and disguised, he shoots off the pass without settling it, and he finds the half-second of space a defender needs to close.
244 shots from a 5-8 winger is a remarkable volume and the locations are good. The playmaking has grown — 31 assists — and it is a secondary skill; he is a shooter first and always has been.
The Physical Game
5-8 and 180, and among the smallest forwards in the league. He does not win pucks, does not forecheck with force, and is separated from possession by any defenceman who gets a body on him.
29 penalty minutes across 82 games. The durability has been genuinely excellent given the size — three consecutive full seasons.
The Intangibles
Four organisations, five 30-goal seasons, and a career of clubs deciding he is not worth what he costs and then watching him score 39.
At 27 the projection is another five years of 30-plus. The reservation is the same one every club has had: he does nothing away from the puck, and a team paying him this much needs three other forwards who do.
