This Season So Far
The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
21 goals and 38 assists in 72 games for 59 points, minus-16, on 17:59 a night with 12 on the power play and 6 game-winners.
48.4 per cent at five-on-five, the 35th percentile. His on-ice goals were 29-45 against an expected 40-42 — 13 goals against on chances that were roughly even, which is the second-worst gap on the roster.
The Finesse Game
The hands and the vision are still the best on the club and possibly among the best of the last twenty years. He sees a pass nobody else is looking for, delays until the lane opens rather than forcing it, and the release from the circle has not slowed.
38 assists at 36 on a rebuilt hip is a genuine achievement. 175 shots and 21 goals at 12 per cent is a fair rate. Everything he produces now happens in a small area with the puck on his stick; there is no rush game and there has not been for years.
The Physical Game
5-10 and 176, and there is nothing here and never was. He does not forecheck, does not win pucks, and does not go near the net front.
12 penalty minutes over 72 games. The hip resurfacing surgery in 2023 was career-threatening and the fact that he has played two useful seasons since is the surprise, not the decline.
The Intangibles
Three Cups, a Conn Smythe, twelve hundred points, and a late career spent making a rebuilding club’s power play work.
At 36 the honest projection is 50 points, a power-play job, and a five-on-five chance share the club has to hide. The value is real and it is nearly all on the man advantage.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe two rank him within 12 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.
Both bars are percentiles among the 357 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 72 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

Share of his five-on-five ice time spent alongside each player, measured from shift charts. Special teams are excluded: a power-play unit is not a line.
Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2024-25
- The club
- DET took 48.2% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 48.4% — 0.2 above the club he did it on.
- The role
- Third line, 955 minutes at five-on-five — 55th percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alex DeBrincat | 53.0% | 37.2% | 48.4% |
| Ben Chiarot | 41.7% | 52.3% | 46.1% |
| Simon Edvinsson | 54.3% | 45.3% | 47.0% |
53.0% together, 37.2% for him apart and 48.4% for DeBrincat apart. Both were worse apart, so whatever the two of them had together was doing real work.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
