20 goals and 20 assists in 81 games — 40 points at 16:00 a night, minus-29, with 175 shots at 11.43 per cent.
It is his most points since the 54 he managed in Detroit in 2018-19, and it came on a club that scored 204 goals, the fewest in the league.
42.8 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,115 minutes, the 11th percentile, and 37.5 per cent of his even-strength shifts started in the offensive zone, the 3rd percentile in the league. He was given the puck in his own end and asked to do something with it, all year.
The Finesse Game

125 goals in 459 career games at 12.27 per cent. He is a scorer and has always been one; what he is not is a player who makes the four men around him better, and on this roster that was the job available.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 190, and the tracking has him at 24.2 mph, the 99th percentile, with 3.7 bursts over 20 mph a game at the 98th. Straight-line speed is the whole player.
It is worth naming precisely what that is and is not. The feed times how fast he goes and how often he gets there; it says nothing about changing direction, and nothing in the shot chart or the possession numbers suggests he beats anyone by turning. This is a man who goes very fast in a straight line at a defenceman and sometimes gets past him.
34 penalty minutes and 2.57 miles a game at the 49th percentile. He is fast rather than hard-working, which at his job is the correct order.
The Intangibles
A fourth-round pick by Detroit in 2012, five clubs by 29, and a reputation that has followed him at each of them: he will score twenty and he will be on for thirty against.
The minus-29 on a 30th-place club is not evidence of much. The 11th-percentile expected-goal share over 1,115 minutes is harder to explain away.
