This Season So Far

The 2023-24 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

16 goals and 20 assists in 61 games for Boston — 36 points at 15:56 a night, plus-11, with 150 shots at 10.67 per cent.

52.3 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 810 minutes, the 69th percentile. His ice went 38-28 against an expectation of 35.09-32.02 — four goals better than expected at the defensive end, which on that club was the smallest share of a very large windfall.

Boston won 65 games and got plus-36.3 from its goaltending. Every Bruin’s on-ice number in this book has to be read with that attached, and his is no exception.

The Finesse Game

150 attempts at a median of 22 feet, 45 per cent from inside twenty and 17 per cent from beyond forty. Twelve goals on 66 shots from inside twenty feet at 18.2 per cent, three from the middle band, two on 27 from beyond forty.

264 goals and 693 points in 822 career games. He remains a legitimate top-six forward who drives a line, and a 69th-percentile expected-goal share as a third-line winger in Boston is a fair account of where he is at 31.

His shot is 86.5 mph at the 19th percentile, which has never been the point. The speed and the ability to carry it in are.

The Physical Game

6-1 and 210 with 24 penalty minutes, and a game built on entering the zone with the puck rather than fighting for it.

22.9 mph at the 82nd percentile and 2.5 bursts over 20 mph a game at the 91st. At 31 he is still quick, and 2.63 miles a game at the 56th says the volume of work is moderate.

The injury record is the thing every club has had to price. He has played a full 82-game season once in thirteen years.

The Intangibles

First overall in 2010 and the Hart Trophy in 2018, and this is his fifth organisation.

Chicago is trading for a 31-year-old on a club that will not be good, which is a transaction about the room and about giving a first overall pick somebody to play with. He carries it out and gains the line under control, and that is a specific and useful thing to hand a nineteen-year-old centre.

What kind of player

The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

  • a strengthread out of the prose, and claimed

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

The two rank him within 10 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.

Both bars are percentiles among the 141 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 68 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

Usual linemates

2022-23 with BOS · 810 minutes at five-on-five

Share of his five-on-five ice time spent alongside each player, measured from shift charts. Special teams are excluded: a power-play unit is not a line.

Why the numbers land there

Five-on-five, 2022-23

The club
BOS took 53.5% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 52.3% — 1.2 below the club he did it on.

50.1% together, 54.0% for him apart and 50.4% for Coyle apart. He was better away from Coyle, who was no worse away from him — the pairing cost him more than it cost Coyle.

Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
