This Season So Far
The 2023-24 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
21 goals and 36 assists in 73 games across Chicago and the Rangers, minus-22, 19:18 a night, 227 shots at 9.3 per cent.
39.6 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,104 minutes — the 4th percentile, and the fifth-worst share of any skater in the league with 900 minutes.
And yet his ice went 49-59 against an expectation of 39.31-59.84: ten goals better than the chances at the offensive end and exactly as expected at the defensive one. He was on the ice for far more scoring than the play deserved, which is what a player of this class does with a bad hip on a bad team.
Sixteen seasons, 1,180 games, 451 goals and 1,237 points.
The Finesse Game
227 shots at a median of 32 feet, 25 per cent from inside twenty and 24 per cent from beyond forty.
Inside forty: 169 shots, 18 goals, 10.65 per cent. Beyond forty: 58 shots, three goals, 5.17 per cent.
10.65 per cent from close range is a poor number for him. 24 backhands out of 227 attempts is a very high count and is the signature of the game: he handles the puck in traffic and shoots off the wrong foot.
85.3 mph at the 13th percentile. The shot has never been hard and the release has always been the thing.
The Physical Game
5-10 and 176. 22.3 mph at the 53rd percentile, 0.8 bursts a game at the 45th, 3.11 miles a game at the 86th.
The mileage says he was still covering ground; the speed says he was not doing it quickly. He had hip resurfacing surgery in June, which is a serious procedure and a rare one in hockey, and every skating number here was recorded before it.
16 penalty minutes in 73 games. He has never played a physical game and at 34 that has stopped being a criticism.
The Intangibles
First overall in 2007, a Calder, a Hart, an Art Ross, a Conn Smythe and three Stanley Cups in Chicago.
He is 35 with a resurfaced hip, and Detroit signed him.
The measured record from last season is genuinely bad — 4th-percentile possession, a career-low shooting percentage, minus-22. What sits against it is that his ice still outscored its chances by ten, and 1,237 points is 1,237 points. This book cannot price a hip and will not pretend otherwise.
What kind of player
The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe report ranks him 39 points above where the numbers do. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.
Both bars are percentiles among the 638 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 64 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

skated, all strengths
one shot; the league's average best is 84.9
A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.
Usual linemates

Share of his five-on-five ice time spent alongside each player, measured from shift charts. Special teams are excluded: a power-play unit is not a line.
Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2022-23
- The club
- NYR took 49.2% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 39.6% — 9.6 below the club he did it on.
- The role
- 1,104 minutes at five-on-five — 71st percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max Domi | 39.2% | 40.3% | 50.4% |
| Andreas Athanasiou | 36.9% | 41.1% | 46.1% |
| Seth Jones | 42.4% | 38.7% | 48.0% |
39.2% together, 40.3% for him apart and 50.4% for Domi apart. Domi was better away from him while his own share held, which is a mark against him more than for him.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
