53.5 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 82nd percentile, across 1,215 minutes. And the club was outscored 52-62 with him on the ice against an expectation of 57.17-49.65. He had the better of the chances by seven goals and the worse of the results by ten.
The Finesse Game
The passing is the whole game and it is among the two or three best at the position in the league. He reads a breakout before it forms, and the first pass out of his own end is quick and accurate under pressure — 51 assists in 74 games is a rate almost nobody on a blue line reaches.
135 attempts at a median of 40 feet with half of them from beyond 40 is a point shot meant to be deflected rather than a weapon. 10 goals is the honest ceiling and it does not matter, because the value was never in the shot.
The Physical Game
5-11 and 185 pounds, and among the smallest men in the league playing twenty-three minutes a night. He defends by anticipation and stick position, gets to the spot before the puck does, and is very rarely beaten wide.
He does not clear his crease and never has. 32 penalty minutes in 74 games says he is almost never reaching, which is the other half of the same sentence: a man who arrives first does not need to foul.
The Intangibles
A third-round pick who was traded twice before he had played a game, refused to sign in Carolina, and arrived here in 2019 on his own terms. He won the Norris Trophy in his second season.
Six seasons, 431 games, 369 points, and a body of work that no longer needs arguing for. The one thing the record will not give him is a heavy partner, and the club spent the summer buying one.
