The Finesse Game

The best puck-handler in this chapter and one of the better ones in the league. He slows a play down at full speed, holds it until a defenceman commits, and finds a man through a lane that was not there when he started — 568 career assists is the record and it is still the first thing on the page.

The shot is now the co-equal half. 37 goals at 15.6 per cent from a median of 35 feet is a scorer’s return without a scorer’s shot chart: only 12 per cent of his attempts came from inside 20 feet. He beats a goaltender by changing the angle and by releasing early, not by getting closer.

The Physical Game

6-0 and 176 and among the lightest forwards in the league playing top-line minutes. He does not win a wall, he is not going to the front of the net, and 16 penalty minutes in 80 games says he does not engage in a way that costs anybody anything.

He survives by being difficult to catch and by giving the puck up a half-second before the hit arrives. It works for 82 games and it is the part of his game a playoff series has repeatedly found.
