8 assists in 68 games is the number that ended his time in New York. He scored 39 goals the season before; the goals halved and the playmaking, which was never the point, disappeared entirely.
The Finesse Game
The skating is still genuinely elite for a 6-3 winger — a long, powerful stride that lets him beat a defenceman wide from a standing start, which is the single skill his whole game is built on.
Everything else is narrow by design. He is a net-front scorer and a rush finisher and has never been a distributor; 4 shorthanded goals says the speed still creates by itself. What has thinned is the volume: 152 shots in 68 games, and a man who needs to be given the puck in space is dependent on a centre who can do it.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 232, and among the more physically punishing wingers in the league to defend at the net front. He takes crosschecks and stays, and he goes through the crease rather than around it.
24 penalty minutes. The body has begun to cost him games — 68 last season, and back trouble that has now been an issue for two years.
The Intangibles
Thirteen seasons and 300 goals in one organisation, a reputation for showing up in Aprils, and an exit that was managed badly by everybody.
Anaheim is buying the possibility that a bad club, a bad year and a bad back are three separate things. At 34 with real term left, that is an expensive experiment, and the honest reading of 30 points is that at least two of those three are permanent.
