49.2 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 43rd percentile, across 1,179 minutes, and the goals with him on the ice were 31-51 against an expectation of 49.45-51.08. He and Artemi Panarin played most of the year together and both carry a twenty-goal hole that the chances say neither of them dug.
The Finesse Game
The hands are good in traffic and he protects the puck well below the goal line, which is where most of what he produces begins. 33 per cent of his attempts came from inside 20 feet at a median of 28, so the shot selection is right.
17 goals on 153 shots at 11.1 per cent is the problem and it is a year old. He scored 28 the season before on a similar volume from similar places; nothing in the chart changed and the puck stopped going in. That is either a finishing slump or the previous year was one, and the archive cannot yet say which.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 191, and he plays a heavy, honest wing. He goes to the wall, he takes the hit to make the play, and he is willing in front of the net.
38 penalty minutes is an ordinary number. There is no edge and there is no reluctance either — he is neither an agitator nor a man who avoids contact, and at his size the middle is a perfectly good place to be.
