The Finesse Game
20 goals on 152 shots at 13.2 per cent, and the shot chart explains all of it: 45 per cent of his attempts came from inside 20 feet at a median of 23. He scores from where a large man is supposed to score and he gets there under his own power.
The passing is the limit. 25 assists is honest depth production and there is no evidence of a playmaker underneath it; he is a finisher and a forechecker, and asking him to carry a line would be asking for the thing he does not have.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 212, and this is the identity. He is the first man in on the forecheck and he arrives to hit rather than to angle, he finishes every check available to him, and he wins the wall against defencemen.
42 penalty minutes in 82 games is the right number for how he plays — an edge that costs a little and is worth more than it costs. He does not cross the line and he does not take the retaliation penalty.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick who has now scored 33 goals in 167 NHL games before his 24th birthday, on a fifteen-minute assignment.
He is the most straightforwardly encouraging player in this chapter: young, cheap, heavy, and improving in a straight line. The projection is a genuine top-six power winger, and it depends entirely on whether the hands catch up to the body.
