Last Season
1 goal and 13 assists in 77 games for 14 points, minus-8, on 20:31 a night between the Rangers and Anaheim.
44.9 per cent at five-on-five, the 14th percentile, over 1,311 minutes. His on-ice goals were 53-54 against an expected 51-63 — 12 goals of goaltending, and he still finished under water on the scoreboard.
The Finesse Game
There is very little. 111 shots and 1 goal, 81 per cent of the attempts from beyond 40 feet, and a first pass that is safe when it works and dangerous when it does not.
He was never a puck-mover and the gap has widened as the league has got faster. The reads are a beat late now, and a defenceman whose game was built on stepping up cannot afford that.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 212, and this is what remains. He hits as hard as anyone in the league and he will still take a run at a forward who has his head down.
66 penalty minutes. Some of it is the price of the style and some of it is a defenceman reaching after being beaten, and on a club with the 28th penalty kill it is expensive either way.
The Intangibles
A captaincy in the largest market in the league, taken away publicly, and a trade three months later. He handled it with more grace than the situation offered.
At 31 with a large contract and a 14th-percentile chance share, the honest reading is that he is being paid for a player who no longer exists. Anaheim took the contract to acquire an asset elsewhere, and there is a version of him — 18 minutes, third pair, penalty kill — that is genuinely useful.
