The Finesse Game
Not the strength, and he does not pretend otherwise. 8 goals on 99 shots at 8 per cent is the finishing of a fourth-line forward, and the passing is functional rather than creative.
What is genuinely good is the pace. He skates well enough to be the first man on a forecheck every shift and to recover when the play turns, and a large part of his value is simply that he is never the reason a rush goes the other way.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 185, and he finishes every check available to him. He gets to the interior, he goes to the net without the puck, and he is willing in the corners against men who outweigh him.
29 penalty minutes is the cost of playing at that speed, and it is a reasonable price. Nothing about the way he plays is careless.
The Intangibles
Undrafted, and an established NHL fourth-liner on a contending club at 26, which is the hard version of that career. He kills penalties, he takes hits to make plays, and he has never been given a minute he did not earn.
The projection is narrow and reliable. This is what he is, and he will be it for another five years unless the legs go, because none of it depends on scoring.
