Last Season
15 goals and 14 assists in 56 games for 29 points with Vegas, plus-17, on 14:30 a night, with 6 on the power play.
He scored at a 22-goal pace in a bottom-six role on a club that had no need of him, which is roughly what he has done everywhere: efficient in limited minutes, and never given more of them.
The Finesse Game
The one-timer is the whole player. It is a genuine NHL weapon from the left circle — quick, heavy, and released off a pass without needing a second to settle it — and it is why he has had a power-play job in every organisation he has been in.
At five-on-five it thins out. He does not carry the puck into the zone, he does not win it back, and his offence is largely dependent on somebody else creating the situation. 6 of his 15 goals came with the man advantage.
The Physical Game
5-11 and 180, and he avoids contact rather than absorbing it. He is not a forechecker, he does not go to the net front, and he will not win a puck along the wall against an NHL defenceman.
16 penalty minutes says what it looks like: he is nowhere near anything.
The Intangibles
A one-year contract for a specialist, which is the correct way to buy this player. Colorado’s power play was 14th in the league last season with more time on it than almost anybody, and the cheapest thing available to fix that is a right-handed release on the off side.
What he is not is a solution at five-on-five, and a coach who plays him 15 minutes a night will get 15 minutes of perimeter hockey for the 2 he wants.
