56.2 per cent at five-on-five, the 94th percentile. The shot chart is the report: a median shot from 19 feet with 53 per cent of them inside 20 and 6 per cent from beyond 40. He does not shoot from anywhere that does not matter.
The Finesse Game
His best offensive work is getting to a spot and being ready when the puck arrives, which sounds like faint praise and is the hardest habit to teach. He is not a puck-carrier and does not create off the rush; what he does is arrive at the net-front or the inside lane a half-second before the pass, every shift, for 20 minutes.
The finishing has caught up with the positioning. 18.2 per cent shooting is high and will regress, but a man taking every shot from inside 20 feet has a real claim to a rate above the league’s, and he has now had two seasons like it.
The Physical Game
5-11 and 179, and he goes into corners against defencemen with 50 pounds on him and comes out with the puck often enough that clubs stopped treating it as a mismatch. 34 penalty minutes is the cost of playing that way.
The body has paid for it. He has played a full 82 once in his career, and the last three seasons have all ended short of it.
The Intangibles
A Cup-winning goal on his record and the reputation of being the man a coach uses in every situation. He kills, he takes the defensive-zone draws, he plays with MacKinnon, and none of those three usually belong to the same player.
At 30 with this style, the question is how many years the body has left rather than how many the game does. Nothing about how he plays gets easier.
