14-6-2 in 24 games, .9083 with a 2.32 average and 2 shutouts on 578 shots.
A backup’s season, and a good one: he took the second half of back-to-backs on a contending club and the results did not sag when he did it.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 201, and the game is compact and technical rather than athletic. Square, quiet, economical — he does not travel further than the puck requires, and he does not fight it.
He will not steal a game with a save nobody else makes. What he does is decline to lose one, which for 25 starts a season is the more useful skill.
The Mental Game
Temperamentally even to the point of being unremarkable, which is the highest compliment available to a backup. He has been the man who plays when somebody else is hurt for a decade across 8 organisations, and there is no record of it visibly bothering him.
He does not scramble unless the play forces it, and he does not carry a bad goal into the next period.
The Intangibles
At 33, exactly what he has always been, and Colorado knows it. The value is in the 25 games nobody has to worry about.
The uncomfortable version of this is that the club’s starter has never held a starting job before and its backup has never been more than this. Behind a team that concedes as little as this one, both will look better than they are; the crease is the one place on this roster where there is no answer, only a plan.
