45.7 per cent at five-on-five, the 17th percentile — which on this roster is the second-best figure among the regular forwards. His on-ice goals were 30-51 against an expected 33-39, so 12 goals of goaltending disappeared from underneath him.
The Finesse Game
The passing is the whole player and it is very good. He plays a patient half-wall game, holds the puck until a defenceman commits, and puts it into space — 43 assists on a club that scored 218 goals is the most impressive individual number in this chapter.
111 shots and 15 goals; 37 per cent of his attempts came from beyond 40 feet, which is a distributor taking what is left rather than a shooter choosing. There is no rush game and there never was.
The Physical Game
5-11 and 191, and there is nothing here. He does not forecheck with force, does not win pucks on the wall, and is separated from possession by a determined defenceman.
12 penalty minutes over 82 games. The durability is genuinely excellent — eight consecutive seasons above 68 games.
The Intangibles
A Cup at 20, eight seasons in Carolina as the least-discussed useful forward on a very good club, and a free-agent return to the organisation that drafted him.
At 31 he is exactly what he has always been: a 55-point playmaker who needs a shooter and a system. Chicago has one of those and not the other.
