Chicago’s goaltending came in 21.9 goals worse than the chances faced, 29th in the league, on a club that was 8th in finishing at 10.7 goals above expectation. Almost the whole of that first number belongs to the two goaltenders who split the season, and the club has kept the worse of them.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 180, and light for the frame, and the game is reactive rather than positional. He is quick and he moves a great deal, and he is square less often than he should be.
The rebound control is the specific weakness — pucks come back into the slot and he then has to make a second save from a scramble, which on a club conceding this many interior chances is a compounding problem.
The Mental Game
Four seasons of being the goaltender on the worst team in the conference, and a save percentage that has been under .900 in three of them.
He has not visibly stopped working and there is no record of him unravelling within a game. There is also no stretch in the record where he has looked like an NHL starter.
