The Finesse Game
The skating is real — quick, light, and genuinely evasive — and the hands work at speed in open ice. That is what made him a first-round pick.
What has never arrived is the ability to do anything with it under pressure. He is dispossessed easily, defers when he should shoot, and four NHL seasons have produced 22 points at best. 42 per cent of his attempts come from inside 20 feet, so it is not a location problem.
The Physical Game
6 feet and 170, and among the lightest forwards in the league. He does not win a puck against an NHL defenceman, does not forecheck with force, and cannot protect possession long enough to use the skill.

The Intangibles
A first-round pick who has been given four seasons and repeated top-six looks on a club with nobody ahead of him.
At 23 there is a little time left and the pattern is not encouraging. The skating alone will get him another chance somewhere; the club that drafted him has largely finished asking.
