53.9 per cent at five-on-five, the 86th percentile — the best figure among the club’s forwards by three points. 57 points in 54 games is a point-per-game pace at 30, and it ended with injury, as most of his seasons have.
The Finesse Game
The most complete offensive centre on the roster. The passing is genuinely high-end — 38 assists in 54 games — and the release from the top of the circle is still quick and accurate.
44 per cent of his shots come from inside 20 feet, which for a player who cannot skate any more is an achievement of positioning. He wins the puck back with anticipation rather than pace, and everything he does is a half-beat earlier than the man defending him expects.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 206, and he plays a low-contact game because the hips do not permit otherwise. He goes to the net on the power play and avoids the wall.
20 penalty minutes in 54 games. The body is the entire projection: multiple hip surgeries, a groin problem, and no full season since 2018-19.
The Intangibles
A first-round pick who scored 30 goals at 20, lost most of five years, and has rebuilt himself into a genuinely effective top-six centre without any of the physical tools he started with.
That is an impressive second act and it comes with an obvious warning. The club is paying for a point-per-game centre and should plan on 55 games of one.
