Jeremy Swayman

Boston Bruins Goaltender

A career .9186 in 132 games, and this club's entire margin now rests on him alone.

This Season So Far

The 2024-25 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

25-10-8 with a .9161, a 2.53 average and 3 shutouts in 44 games, facing 1,287 shots.

The club’s goaltending came in 27.2 goals better than the chances faced, 2nd in the league, behind a defence that was 16th at suppressing them. He and Linus Ullmark shared it and Ullmark has been traded.

The Physical Game

6-3 and 195. He plays deep and square, letting the frame take the top of the net rather than chasing the shot out to meet it, and the stance is unusually still — there is very little wasted movement and almost no reaching.

The rebound control is very good and it is the method. A club that concedes 135 goals at five-on-five against an expectation of 162.2 is a club that is not defending second chances, and that is what this is. He tracks pucks through traffic as well as any goaltender his age in the league.

The glove is quick and the lateral recovery is better than the size suggests.

The Mental Game

A career .9186 across 132 games and 12 shutouts, and it has not moved in four seasons — .9186 is what he does whether he plays twenty games or forty-four.

He has never been given a crease outright. Every year of his NHL career has been a tandem, and the save percentage has been the same in all of them.

The Intangibles

A hundred and eleventh overall in 2017, out of Maine, and 79 wins in 132 games at 25.

The club won 109 points on 27.2 goals of goaltending and then traded the other half of the tandem, which makes this the most consequential player on the roster. He has never played sixty games in a season and he is about to be asked to.
