50.8 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,050 minutes, the 58th percentile — a better share than David Pastrnak’s line produced. His ice went 50-41 against an expectation of 42.62-41.25.
The Finesse Game
123 attempts at a median of 21 feet, with 48 per cent from inside 20 and 20 per cent from beyond 40, converting at 14.63 per cent.
He goes to the net and he scores from the paint, and eighteen goals in under fourteen minutes a night is a very good rate for the ice he is given. There is a real shot here and it was not obvious three years ago.
22 assists. He is not a distributor and the club does not ask for it.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 221, and he is the club’s designated hard man on a line that also scores. He finishes every check, he wins pucks below the goal line, and he will fight.
69 penalty minutes in 82 games and 263 in 280 for his career — very nearly a minute a game across a six-year career. He retaliates and he takes liberties, and on a club that spent 5:30 a game shorthanded that is a real cost against a real deterrent.
The Intangibles
Twenty-ninth overall in 2016 and 280 games at 26, all of them here, after four seasons of being a fourth-line forward who could not stay in the lineup.
A first-round pick who becomes a forty-point third-line winger at 26 is a good outcome, and this club needed exactly that in the year it lost two centres.
