Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Last in the league in chance share, last in chance suppression, and 27.5 goals of goaltending — the largest gap between a team and its goaltender in this edition.

Who this names 12 of 23 on the roster · 66% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Sam Colangelo, Lukas Dostal, Jansen Harkins, Drew Helleson, Ville Husso, Alex Killorn, Petr Mrazek, Nikita Nesterenko, Ryan Strome, Troy Terry, Frank Vatrano.

What the Quant Says

30th in shot-attempt share, 30th in chance share, 32nd in chance suppression, 25th on the power play, 28th on the kill. There is no phase of this team that is above the league median, and 221 goals for against 263 against is a fair reflection of it.

What makes the chapter worth reading is the two things underneath. The goaltending was 27.5 goals above the chances faced, 2nd in the league — the single largest gap between a club and its goaltender in this edition, and the reason the record was 80 points rather than 60. And the scoring came from McTavish at 22, Carlsson at 20, Gauthier at 21 and LaCombe at 24, none of whom is close to finished.

The summer answer was veterans: Granlund, Kreider, Mrázek, Ryan Poehling, and a new coach in Joel Quenneville. That will make the club harder to play against. It does not address a blue line where the best chance share is the 35th percentile.

What the Scout Says

A young club with two or three genuine building blocks, an elite goaltender nobody outside the division has noticed, and a blue line that cannot defend.

Leo Carlsson is 6-3 and plays a slow, deliberate possession game — he protects the puck below the goal line, waits for a lane, and makes the pass a beat later than a defenceman expects. The vision is the best thing on the roster and it is unusual at 20. Lukas Dostál covers a net by moving to the puck rather than by occupying space, and the lateral quickness is high-end; more importantly he does not get progressively worse as a game gets worse, which facing 33 shots a night is the whole job.

Around them the club is heavy and slow in the wrong places. Radko Gudas and Jacob Trouba are two of the most feared hitters of their generation, both past the point where that compensates, taking 152 penalty minutes between them on a club with the 29th penalty kill. Ross Johnston plays a role the league has stopped having. Meanwhile Olen Zellweger at 5-10 and Pavel Mintyukov at 21 are being asked to defend NHL forwards without a partner who can help them.

How they were used

2024-25 · 79 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
