The read
the numbers, and the eyeThe worst chance share in the league, the worst penalty kill in it, and 338 goals against — and both the finishing and the goaltending were ordinary, which is what makes it so bad.
Who this names 8 of 20 on the roster · 45% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Sam Carrick, Lukas Dostal, Adam Henrique, Max Jones, Brett Leason, Isac Lundeström, Brock McGinn, Jakob Silfverberg, Ryan Strome, Troy Terry, Urho Vaakanainen, Frank Vatrano.
What the Quant Says
23-47-12, 58 points, 32nd in the league and last in the Pacific.
209 goals for, 31st. 338 against, 32nd. Thirty-second in shot-attempt share at five-on-five, 32nd in chance share, 30th at creating chances at even strength, 32nd at suppressing them, and 32nd on the penalty kill.
At five-on-five: 143 goals scored against 144.0 expected, and 224 conceded against 218.6. One goal of finishing lost and five and a half of goaltending. The finishing was 19th and the goaltending 18th. That is the important line on this page. The worst team in hockey was not the unluckiest one. It was the one that could neither generate a chance nor prevent one.
The gap between Anaheim and the second-worst defensive club in the league is as wide as the gap between second-worst and twelfth-worst.
The five lowest five-on-five chance shares in this book were all recorded here. Cam Fowler played 82 games at 24:10 and finished minus-23. John Gibson faced 1,983 shots.
Alex Killorn, Radko Gudas, Ilya Lyubushkin and Robert Hagg all arrive. Simon Benoit, Maxime Comtois, Kevin Shattenkirk and Anthony Stolarz do not.
The four most interesting forwards here are 22, 20, 26 and 25. Everything Anaheim signed this summer is a thirty-something brought in to make the ice safer for them.
What the Scout Says
A twenty-two-year-old, a twenty-year-old, and four veterans bought to stand between them and the rest of the league.
Trevor Zegras was ninth overall in 2019 and had 65 points at 22. Mason McTavish was third overall in 2021 and had 43 points at 20. Cam Fowler has 893 games in one uniform and played 24:10 a night.
The talent at the top of the forward group is real and it is young, and the roster around it has been assembled to keep it from being physically overwhelmed while it grows. Whether that is a plan or an admission depends on the next two seasons.

How they were used
2022-23 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
