Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

A club that finished 23rd and then sold the three veterans who made it that good, leaving a 21-year-old, a 20-year-old defenceman and four thirty-somethings signed in July.

Who this names 9 of 22 on the roster · 62% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Nathan Beaulieu, Simon Benoit, Sam Carrick, Maxime Comtois, John Gibson, Derek Grant, Adam Henrique, Brett Leason, Isac Lundeström, Jakob Silfverberg, Anthony Stolarz, Urho Vaakanainen, Colton White.

What the Quant Says

31-37-14, 76 points, 23rd in the league and sixth in the Pacific.

232 goals for, 22nd. 271 against, 23rd. 22nd in shot-attempt share at five-on-five at 47.8 per cent, 21st in chance share at 48.0, 19th at creating chances at even strength and 25th at suppressing them. Every one of those is bad. None of them is catastrophic.

At five-on-five: 154 goals scored against 162.3 expected, and 186 conceded against 175.5. The finishing was 27th in the league at minus-8.3 goals and the goaltending 21st at minus-10.5. A club roughly 21st in play lost nineteen goals at the two ends where luck and technique live, and finished 23rd.

What matters is not the season. It is what left after it. Ryan Getzlaf retired. Hampus Lindholm was sold to Boston, Josh Manson to Colorado and Rickard Rakell to Pittsburgh in the same March week, and Sonny Milano, Nicolas Deslauriers and Buddy Robinson went in the summer. Seven of the eighteen men who made up this club's four lines and three defence pairs are not here.

John Klingberg, Ryan Strome, Frank Vatrano and Dmitry Kulikov all arrive, on one-, five-, three- and two-year deals respectively. Their average age is 29.

Trevor Zegras had 61 points at 20, Troy Terry 37 goals at 24, and Jamie Drysdale played 81 games at 19:53 a night at 19. Those three are the club. Everything else on this page is scaffolding around them.

What the Scout Says

A 21-year-old with the best hands this organisation has developed since Getzlaf, a 20-year-old defenceman who accelerates to speed more often than anybody at his position in hockey, and four veterans bought in July to make the ice around them survivable.

Trevor Zegras was 9th overall in 2019 and had 61 points at 20. Jamie Drysdale was 6th overall in 2020 and played 81 games at nineteen. Troy Terry was a 5th-round pick who scored 37 goals in his fourth full season.

Everything else here is a question of what a rebuild is allowed to cost. Cam Fowler is 30, has played 811 games in one uniform, and is being asked to absorb minutes a contending club would spread across two men. Kevin Shattenkirk is 33 and has run out of speed. John Klingberg, Ryan Strome, Frank Vatrano and Dmitry Kulikov were all signed to be better than what left, and all four of them will be past 30 before this club is good.

The roster

Evidence 0 Full 20 Light 2 No record

No measured season behind two of them: John Gibson and Anthony Stolarz. Their pages carry an older stat line and a judgment, and nothing from 2021-22.

28

Evidence behind this report: Light. Thinner than most: part of the record is missing, only 216 five-on-five minutes. The page is honest about what it has, but it is a smaller sample than the book's norm.

Evidence behind this report: Light. Thinner than most: part of the record is missing. The page is honest about what it has, but it is a smaller sample than the book's norm.

G · Anaheim Ducks

Three straight seasons at .904 or worse behind a club that has now sold its two best defencemen — and his backup was thirteen points of save percentage better in the same crease.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
