The read
the numbers, and the eye29th in creating chances, 9th at preventing them, and a playoff place taken on 97 points in a season its best player missed half of.
Who this names 10 of 22 on the roster · 54% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Zach Bogosian, Marcus Foligno, Vinnie Hinostroza, Marcus Johansson, Ben Jones, Jake Middleton, Liam Ohgren, Nico Sturm, Vladimir Tarasenko, Yakov Trenin, Jesper Wallstedt.
What the Quant Says
97 points and a playoff place, from a club that was 28th in shot-attempt share and 29th at creating chances and lost its best player for half the season.
The construction is unusually lopsided. 5th at preventing chances, 29th at creating them, 12th in goaltending, 21st in finishing. This is a team that defends and does not attack, and it survived because Filip Gustavsson faced the fifth-most shots in the league and stopped .9138 of them.
What decides the next three years is on the ice already. Kaprizov is 28 and signed for the largest contract in league history. Boldy is 24 and put up 73 points carrying a club without him. Rossi is 24 and gets to the paint more than anybody here. Brock Faber is 23 and is being played 25 minutes a night that he is not ready for. Around them: Zuccarello at 38, Spurgeon at 36, Brodin at 32 with 50 games, Eriksson Ek with 46, and a penalty kill undone by four men's tempers.
What the Scout Says
A defensive club with one great player, one very good young one, and a blue line held together by a 23-year-old playing more minutes than anybody in the league except one man.
Kirill Kaprizov is the most skilled player this organisation has had — hands that work in traffic at full speed, a heavy disguised release, and the ability to beat a defenceman one-on-one from a standing start, at 5-10 and 202 pounds built low and thick enough that nobody knocks him off a puck. Matt Boldy has learned to shoot rather than wait, and 271 attempts is what that looks like.
Around them the roster is heavy, slow and disciplined in inverse proportion to how much it should be. Jared Spurgeon at 166 pounds defends entirely by position and takes 14 penalty minutes a season. Marcus Foligno at 226 takes 75. Ryan Hartman takes 75 and a ten-game suspension. Marco Rossi is 5-9 and goes to the net front 53 per cent of the time. Brock Faber skates like the best defenceman on the roster and posts the chance share of a third-pair one, because of how he is used.

No measured season behind two of them: Filip Gustavsson and Jesper Wallstedt. Their pages carry an older stat line and a judgment, and nothing from 2024-25.

How they were used
2024-25 · 79 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
