25 goals and 31 assists in 41 games for 56 points, plus-19, on 22:28 a night and 145 shots.
1.37 points a game. Over 82 that is a 112-point season, and it ended in December with a lower-body injury that required surgery. 53.4 per cent at five-on-five, the 81st percentile, on a club that was 28th in shot-attempt share.
The Finesse Game
The most skilled player in this organisation’s history. The hands work in traffic at full speed, the release is heavy and disguised, and he beats defencemen one-on-one from a standing start more often than anybody in the league except two or three men.
17.2 per cent shooting on 145 attempts is a high rate and he has sustained something near it for five seasons. 31 assists in 41 games is the half that gets discussed least — he has become a genuine distributor rather than a pure shooter.
The Physical Game
5-10 and 202, and built low and thick. He is very difficult to knock off a puck for his height, he goes into corners, and he protects possession with his body rather than by avoiding contact.
16 penalty minutes over 41 games. The durability is the concern: he has now missed significant time in two of the last three seasons, and this club has no second scorer.
The Intangibles
A fifth-round pick who spent five seasons in Russia, arrived at 23, and has been the best player on the ice in most games he has played since.
At 28, on the largest contract in league history signed this summer, everything about Minnesota’s next decade rests on him. The club scored 214 goals in a season he played half of, which is the clearest possible statement of what he is worth.
