Minnesota Wild Goaltender

2 NHL games at 22, an .8431, and the goaltender this organisation has been waiting four years for.

This Season So Far

The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

0-2-0 in 2 games, .8431 with a 4.09 average on 51 shots.

Two games. There is nothing to read in the number and it is the whole of his NHL record. The American League season underneath it was ordinary rather than dominant, which is the more useful fact and the more worrying one.

The Physical Game

6-3 and 214, and the game is large, calm and positional. He plays a deep crease, is square more often than most goaltenders his age, and does not travel further than the puck requires.

The technique is genuinely advanced for 22 and it is the reason he was a first-round pick. The lateral quickness is adequate rather than exceptional, and the rebound control is the part still developing — pucks come off him further into the slot than they should.

The Mental Game

Two seasons in the American League that have not gone as expected, and a first NHL call-up that produced two losses.

There is no evidence yet of how he handles a bad stretch at this level, and the professional record to date is a young goaltender being asked to be patient in an organisation that keeps saying he is next.

The Intangibles

A first-round pick, a Swedish professional at 17, and four seasons of being the most discussed prospect in this organisation.

At 22 there is a great deal of time and the runway is narrowing — Filip Gustavsson is 27 and signed, and a third consecutive ordinary American League season would change the conversation entirely.
