The Finesse Game
There is essentially no offence and it is not the job. The first pass is clean and quick and 16 assists in 50 games is a fair return for a defensive defenceman.
The skating is the tool: he closes a gap at the blue line as well as anybody in the league and recovers when beaten, which is why he has held a shutdown role for thirteen seasons.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 196, and light. He defends with position and stick rather than force, does not clear a crease decisively, and is rarely beaten badly enough to need to.
18 penalty minutes over 50 games is excellent. The body is the recurring issue — he has cleared 70 games twice in six seasons.
The Intangibles
A first-round pick, fourteen seasons in one organisation, and a decade of being among the more underrated defensive defencemen in the league.
At 32 the projection is 60 games of very good defending. This blue line has two men in their thirties who cannot stay healthy and a 23-year-old playing 25 minutes because of it.
