Ask the book

2024-25 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2024-25 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Only Carolina allowed chances at a lower rate, and only four clubs got worse goaltending — nineteen goals of it, which is the season.

Who this names 7 of 22 on the roster · 40% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Jonas Brodin, Declan Chisholm, Joel Eriksson Ek, Marcus Foligno, Frederick Gaudreau, Brendan Gaunce, Filip Gustavsson, Ryan Hartman, Marcus Johansson, Reese Johnson, Jakub Lauko, Jon Merrill, Jake Middleton, Devin Shore, Yakov Trenin.

What the Quant Says

39-34-9, 87 points, 20th in the league, eleven points out of the last playoff place in the West.

The club was second in hockey at suppressing chances and twenty-eighth at stopping the ones that got through. Those two facts are the whole season. Nineteen goals of goaltending on a club that finished eleven points out is not a coincidence, it is the arithmetic.

251 goals for and 263 against. The attack is Kaprizov and three others; the defence is genuinely good; the crease is the twenty-eighth-best in the league and there is no third goaltender in the organisation ready to change that.

Brock Faber at 21 played more than all but five defencemen in this edition and produced 47 points. Marco Rossi scored 21 goals in his first full season at 22 and Matt Boldy is 23 with 171 points in 203 games. The young half of this roster is real.

What it needs is a save. The structure in front of the net is already better than almost anybody's, and nothing else about this club will matter until somebody stops the puck.

What the Scout Says

A club that defends as well as anybody in hockey, cannot score, and cannot make a save.

Kirill Kaprizov has 160 goals in 278 games and is the only forward here who frightens anybody. Brock Faber is 22 and played 24:58 a night last season. Marc-Andre Fleury is 39 with 1,025 games behind him.

The age distribution is odd: Kaprizov 27, Boldy 23, Rossi 23, Faber 22 at the top, then Zuccarello 37, Bogosian 34, Johansson 34, Foligno 33 and Fleury 39 filling the rest of the lineup. There is very little in between, and the old half of it is being asked to hold on for two more years.

How they were used

2023-24 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
