The read
the numbers, and the eyeThird in the league at creating chances at even strength and 31st in finishing — 169.1 expected goals at five-on-five and 145 scored, in the first season of a club that has not existed anywhere else.
Who this names 15 of 23 on the roster · 74% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Nick DeSimone, Sean Durzi, Alexander Kerfoot, Olli Maatta, John Marino, Liam O'Brien, Kevin Stenlund, Karel Vejmelka.
What the Quant Says
89 points, 38-31-13, and four points outside the playoffs in the first season of a franchise that had never existed before.
The club took 53.0 per cent of the shot attempts at five-on-five, 6th in the league, and 53.2 per cent of the expected goals, also 6th. It was 3rd in the league at creating chances at even strength.
And it scored 145 goals in that state against an expectation of 169.1 — 24.1 short, 31st in the league.
That is the largest gap between process and result in this edition and it is not a subtle one. A club that generates chances at the third-best rate in hockey and finishes 21st in goals is not a bad hockey team having a bad season. It is a good hockey team that did not score.
The honest reading is that this repeats in the club's favour rather than against it. Finishing at five-on-five is the least persistent thing a roster does, and the men who came up short — Keller, Schmaltz, Cooley, Guenther, Hayton — are 27, 29, 20, 21 and 25. The penalty kill at 30th is the failure that will not fix itself, and the club spent the summer on it.
JJ Peterka was acquired from Buffalo for Michael Kesselring and a young forward, which is a top-four right-shot defenceman traded for a 23-year-old with 68 points, and it says the organisation believes it is a season away. Nate Schmidt, Brandon Tanev, Kevin Rooney and Vitek Vanecek were signed. Matias Maccelli went to Toronto, Nick Bjugstad to St. Louis, Vladislav Kolyachonok to Dallas and Connor Ingram to Edmonton.
Of every club that missed the playoffs in this edition, this is the one whose numbers say it should not have.
What the Scout Says
A young, fast, small hockey team with one enormous defenceman and two men who hit everything.
Clayton Keller is 5-10 and 175 pounds and among the lightest forwards in the league, and he threw 60 assists. Nick Schmaltz is 6-0 and 184 and took 14 penalty minutes in 82 games. Logan Cooley is 191 pounds and 21. That is the top of the roster and none of it wins a puck on a wall.
Jack McBain is 6-4 and 219 and the hardest man here to play against — he forechecks with force, he finishes checks that hurt, and 78 penalty minutes in 82 games is the most on the club. Lawson Crouse is 6-4 and 214 and finishes every check, and he had 6 assists in 81 games.
Ian Cole is 6-1 and 237 pounds at 36 with 821 penalty minutes in 908 career games. He is the reason the blue line is not soft, and Mikhail Sergachev is the reason it is good.
And the two additions are exactly the right shape. Brandon Tanev forechecks as hard as anybody in the league and took 16 penalty minutes in 79 games; Michael Carcone is 5-9 and hits everybody.

How they were used
2024-25 · 78 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
