Olli Maatta
Utah Mammoth Defense
Sixteen per cent of his shot attempts from inside 20 feet — high for a defensive defenceman — and a plus-7 across two clubs.

This Season So Far
The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
2 goals and 16 assists in 77 games across Detroit and Utah — 18 points at 19:33 a night, plus-7, with only 16 penalty minutes.
50.7 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 60th percentile, across 1,279 minutes. His ice went 35-50 against an expectation of 49.26-47.92 — fourteen goals of scoring missing and two conceded above expectation.
The Finesse Game
73 attempts at a median of 48 feet with 64 per cent from beyond 40 and 16 per cent from inside 20, which is a high share for a defensive defenceman and says he joins the rush more than the role suggests.
16 assists. The first pass is quick and simple, and he has never been asked to carry the puck; 195 points in 761 career games is the honest offensive record.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 207 and positionally sound rather than punishing. He blocks shots, he defends the front of his own net, and he does not need to hit anybody to end a play.
16 penalty minutes in 77 games at nearly twenty minutes a night is a very low rate. He is rarely beaten badly enough to reach and he is a first-unit penalty killer.
The Intangibles
Twenty-second overall in 2012 and 761 games and 195 points across five organisations, with two Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh — the second of them at 22.
He is 31 and has had two of the more serious health scares in recent league history: a tumour removed from his neck at 21 and a shoulder that has been rebuilt twice.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe numbers rank him 31 points above where the report does. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.
Both bars are percentiles among the 637 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 69 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2024-25
- The club
- UTA took 53.2% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 50.7% — 2.5 below the club he did it on.
- The role
- Second pair, 1,279 minutes at five-on-five — 90th percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mikhail Sergachev | 47.9% | 52.0% | 54.0% |
| Barrett Hayton | 54.7% | 49.3% | 59.1% |
| Alexander Kerfoot | 52.2% | 50.1% | 55.8% |
47.9% together, 52.0% for him apart and 54.0% for Sergachev apart. Both were better apart than together — the pairing was doing neither of them any favours.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
