Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Last in the league in goals for and goals against, dead last on the penalty kill, and an 18-year-old who scored 63 points on it and won the Calder Trophy.

Who this names 13 of 21 on the roster · 60% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Yaroslav Askarov, Vincent Desharnais, Mario Ferraro, Collin Graf, Timothy Liljegren, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Tyler Toffoli, Alexander Wennberg.

What the Quant Says

52 points, 20-50-12, and the worst record in the league by nine points.

210 goals for — fewest in hockey. 315 against — most. 45.7 per cent of the shot attempts at five-on-five, 31st. 44.2 per cent of the expected goals, 31st. 31st at creating chances, 30th at suppressing them, 30th in goaltending, and dead last on the penalty kill.

There is no argument to make about any of that and there is no need to make one, because the season was about a single 18-year-old.

Macklin Celebrini scored 63 points in 70 games and took 49.6 per cent of the expected goals — the 47th percentile — on a club that finished 31st. He was first overall in 2024 after a Hobey Baker season at Boston University at 17, and he won the Calder Trophy. Will Smith had 45 points at 19 and William Eklund 41 assists at 22.

That is the entire asset base and it is a real one. What surrounds it is not. Barclay Goodrow posted a 38.6 per cent chance share — the 0th percentile, the worst figure of any regular in this edition — with a minus-37 and 75 penalty minutes. Ty Dellandrea scored one goal in 68 games.

The deadline sold everything that could be sold. Fabian Zetterlund to Ottawa, Mikael Granlund to Anaheim, Jake Walman to Edmonton, Cody Ceci to Los Angeles, Luke Kunin to Florida. The summer bought veterans on short money — Jeff Skinner, Dmitry Orlov, Nick Leddy, Adam Gaudette, Philipp Kurashev, Ryan Reaves, Alex Nedeljkovic — which is a club acknowledging that the teenagers need somebody to stand next to.

It is the fourth consecutive season of this and it is the first one with a reason to watch.

What the Scout Says

Two of the most talented teenagers in hockey, and a roster built to protect them that could not.

Macklin Celebrini is 6-0 and 190 and still filling out. He does not avoid contact, he goes to the net, and he wins more pucks on the wall than a rookie his size has any business winning. The release is quick and deceptive and he does not need to set his feet.

Will Smith is 6-0 and 180 and among the lightest forwards in this chapter, and the hands are the reason he went fourth overall — he makes passes through traffic that nobody else on this roster attempts. William Eklund is 5-10 and 185 and is the best passer on the club.

All three of them are small and all three of them are young, and the weight around them last season was Barclay Goodrow, Ty Dellandrea and Zack Ostapchuk — 75, 59 and 45 penalty minutes and seven goals between them.

Ryan Reaves was acquired in the summer with 1,100 career penalty minutes, and the argument for him is entirely about who is on the ice when somebody runs a 19-year-old.

How they were used

2024-25 · 78 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
