Ask the book

2024-25 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2024-25 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Ninth in the league in goals against and twenty-ninth in goals for — a twenty-place gap, the widest in the edition.

Who this names 4 of 22 on the roster · 18% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Oliver Bjorkstrand, Will Borgen, Andre Burakovsky, Jordan Eberle, Ryker Evans, Yanni Gourde, Philipp Grubauer, Tye Kartye, Adam Larsson, Joshua Mahura, Ben Meyers, Brandon Montour, Jamie Oleksiak, Jaden Schwartz, Mitchell Stephens, Chandler Stephenson, Brandon Tanev, Eeli Tolvanen.

What the Quant Says

34-35-13, 81 points, 23rd in the league and eleventh in the West — seventeen points behind Vegas for the last place in the conference.

Ninth in the league in goals against and twenty-ninth in goals for. Twenty places between the two, the widest such gap in this edition and six clear of the next club. Winnipeg was first in goals against and fifteenth in goals for; nobody else came close to what Seattle managed.

At five-on-five: 144 goals scored against 160.6 expected, and 146 conceded against 155.9. Sixteen and a half goals lost to finishing, ten gained back by goaltending. The finishing was 28th and the goaltending 9th, which is the season in one line.

Seattle allowed the eighth-fewest expected goals per 60 at even strength in the league and created the twenty-fifth-most. It took 51.3 per cent of the attempts and 50.8 per cent of the chances and could not turn either into goals.

Matty Beniers was second overall in 2021 and scored 57 points as a rookie; he had 37 last season. Vince Dunn had 64 points two seasons ago and 46 in 59 games. Jared McCann scored 40 goals two seasons ago and 29. The three men this club counts on for goals all scored fewer of them.

This club defends. Three seasons into its existence it has not yet found anybody who scores.

What the Scout Says

A genuinely good defensive club with the twenty-ninth-best offence in hockey, and nobody on the roster who has ever scored thirty twice.

Fourteen of the fifteen men who played here last season finished below what their chances were worth. Joey Daccord went 19-18-11 with a 2.46 as a seventh-round pick in his first season as a starter. Seattle took the second-fewest shorthanded minutes in the league.

The structure is real: eighth at suppressing chances, ninth in goals against, ninth in goaltending. What is missing is a finisher, and the club has now gone three seasons without drafting or buying one.

How they were used

2023-24 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
