The read
the numbers, and the eye29th in the league at five-on-five chance share and 5th in finishing, with the eighteenth-most power-play time in hockey and the 29th-ranked power play to spend it on.
Who this names 15 of 21 on the roster · 69% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Vince Dunn, Philipp Grubauer, Kaapo Kakko, Adam Larsson, Joshua Mahura, Brandon Montour.
What the Quant Says
76 points, 35-41-6, and a fourth spring outside the playoffs in five seasons.
The club was 29th in the league in five-on-five chance share and 5th in finishing. It scored 164 goals at five-on-five against an expectation of 145.5 and conceded 174 against 162.9 — eighteen goals better than it deserved at one end and eleven worse at the other.
And it spent 5:14 a night on the power play, the eighteenth-most in the league, at the 31st-ranked rate in it.
That is the whole chapter and it is an unusual kind of bad. Every advantage this club had last season was conversion — a 20.9 per cent shooting percentage from a 21-year-old, a 17.8 from a first-line centre who took 73 shots in 78 games — and none of it is a thing a roster keeps. Underneath it, a club that is 26th at creating chances and 23rd at suppressing them was outshot most nights and stayed close because Joey Daccord faced 1,599 shots and stopped 90.6 per cent of them.
Dan Bylsma was dismissed after one season and Lane Lambert was hired. The deadline emptied the veteran half of the roster — Yanni Gourde and Oliver Bjorkstrand to Tampa Bay, Brandon Tanev out, Andre Burakovsky to Chicago — and the summer bought size and age back: Mason Marchment from Dallas, Frederick Gaudreau from Minnesota, Ryan Lindgren and John Hayden signed.
The young half is the reason to watch. Shane Wright is 21, Matty Beniers 22, Ryker Evans 23 and Tye Kartye 24, and the club has a goaltender signed long who is the least of its problems.
What the Scout Says
A small, clean, well-behaved hockey team with two enormous defencemen and nobody who is unpleasant to play against.
Jamie Oleksiak is 6-7 and 252 and nobody moves him from anywhere. He clears the front of his own net by standing in it, and 34 penalty minutes in 82 games is a remarkably low rate for a man that size — he is not an agitator and he does not take liberties.
Above him the roster is light and quick. Jaden Schwartz is 5-10, Jordan Eberle 5-11 and 180, Eeli Tolvanen 5-10 and Chandler Stephenson does not finish a check. Jared McCann took 18 penalty minutes in 82 games and Frederick Gaudreau 8.
The exceptions are two men. Tye Kartye took 43 penalty minutes in 63 games at nine and a half minutes a night and has the best chance share of any forward on the club. Mason Marchment is 6-5, undrafted, and took 53 penalty minutes in 62 games in Dallas — he crosses the line, he draws the response, and he is the only heavy scorer this roster has ever had.
On a club that spent the eighteenth-most power-play time in the league, buying somebody who draws penalties was the correct instinct.

How they were used
2024-25 · 79 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
