Ten goals on 64 shots at eleven minutes a night is a good rate on very little ice time, and the conversion percentage is high enough that it should be read with caution.
The Finesse Game
The release is quick and he shoots without hesitating, which is the most marketable thing about him — a fourth- line winger who scores ten goals in eleven minutes is doing something the roster needs.
The playmaking is limited: 8 assists in 62 games. He goes north with the puck and he does not hold it to make a play, and at 23 that is as likely to be coaching as it is to be ceiling.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 204 and he forechecks hard and finishes checks. He is willing on the wall and does not get moved off a puck easily.
20 penalty minutes in 62 games is a reasonable rate, and on a club whose penalty kill finished 31st it matters more than usual.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick, traded twice before 24 — first in the Tyler Toffoli deal, then as part of the price of a top-four defenceman.
He is 23 and cheap and he arrived on a club with room in its bottom six. Being the secondary piece in a trade made for draft picks is the cheapest kind of opportunity there is, and it is the kind most likely to be taken.
