Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

106 points, a conference final, and 27th in the league at preventing chances — a season held up almost entirely by Jake Oettinger and 31 goals of finishing.

Who this names 5 of 22 on the roster · 30% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Oskar Bäck, Nathan Bastian, Lian Bichsel, Colin Blackwell, Mavrik Bourque, Casey DeSmith, Matt Duchene, Radek Faksa, Thomas Harley, Wyatt Johnston, Vladislav Kolyachonok, Esa Lindell, Nils Lundkvist, Jake Oettinger, Jason Robertson, Tyler Seguin, Sam Steel.

What the Quant Says

106 points, a Western Conference final, and 27th in the league at preventing chances at even strength. Both of those are true and the reconciliation is a goaltender.

The goaltending came in 19.7 goals above the chances faced, 3rd in hockey, and the finishing 6.9 above, 12th — roughly 27 goals of help on a club whose five-on-five goal differential was plus-31. The attack is real: 4th in creating chances, a 3rd-ranked power play, and Rantanen signed for eight years. The defence is not, and it was not merely Heiskanen's knee — the club was outchanced with him too.

This is a very good hockey team with a structural hole and a goaltender good enough to cover it for 82 games. What it has now discovered twice is that April asks the question more sharply.

What the Scout Says

A skill club with a heavy captain, a great goaltender, and a blue line that defends with position because three of the men on it cannot defend any other way.

Mikko Rantanen is 6-4 and 228 with hands that belong on a much smaller man — he holds the puck on the wall until a defenceman commits and then either walks out of the corner with it or finds the man arriving late, and there is no way to defend both. Miro Heiskanen is the most effortless skater on the roster and one of the best defensive defencemen alive, closing a gap without appearing to accelerate so that attackers reach the blue line with nowhere to put the puck.

What surrounds them is uneven. Wyatt Johnston's hockey sense arrived fully formed at 19 and he already shoots from where goals come from. Roope Hintz is the fastest big man here and enters the zone with control, which is the rarest thing a centre can do. Then there is Jamie Benn at 35 taking 70 penalty minutes in fifteen minutes a night, Ilya Lyubushkin playing top-pair minutes on weight alone, and a 21-year-old who is 6-7 and not ready. The crease is the best thing about the club and the least discussed.

How they were used

2024-25 · 78 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
