52.1 per cent at five-on-five, the 71st percentile, and on-ice goals of 52-33 against an expected 42-39 — the largest goal surplus of any forward on the roster, which is a compliment to the line and a caution about the sustainability.
The Finesse Game
The fastest big man in the organisation and one of the faster centres in the league. He enters the zone with control at speed, which is the rarest thing a centre can do, and the defenceman backing off is how his wingers get their room.
44 per cent of his attempts come from inside 20 feet and the finishing has been genuinely good for five years — this is not a one-season 17.5 per cent. The passing is quick and simple rather than creative; he is a driver rather than a distributor.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 217, and he uses the size defensively more than offensively. He is hard to knock off a puck at speed and he is a real presence on the backcheck, but he does not initiate and does not go to the net front as often as a man built like this should.
30 penalty minutes over 76 games. The durability is the recurring worry — he has missed time in each of the last four seasons and rarely the same thing twice.
The Intangibles
The number-one centre on a Western Conference finalist, and almost never spoken of as one. He plays against the other club’s best line, kills penalties, and has been the most consistent forward here for four years.
At 28 this is what he is, and it is a good deal for the money. The reservation is availability: a club whose forward group depends on him for the hard matchup has now spent four postseasons hoping.
