Last Season

16 goals and 33 assists in 80 games for 49 points, plus-3, on 15:18 a night — the least ice time of his career by three minutes.

48.6 per cent at five-on-five, the 37th percentile, which is the lowest figure among the club’s regular forwards. 49 points on that share is a man being carried by his linemates rather than the reverse.

The Finesse Game

The hands are still good in tight and the passing has held up better than anything else — 33 assists at 35 in fifteen minutes a night is real. He plays a slow, heavy possession game below the goal line where his lack of pace does not cost him.

49 per cent of his shots come from inside 20 feet, so he is still going to the right places. The finishing has thinned out: 16 goals on 136 shots, and the release that used to beat goaltenders from distance does not any more.

The Physical Game

6-3 and 210, and the physical game is the last thing that will leave him. He still wins pucks on the wall, still goes to the net front, and still finishes checks at an age where most captains have stopped.

70 penalty minutes is the second-highest total on the club and the mark of a man who has not adjusted his temperature to his ice time. Some of that is useful. Some of it is a 35-year-old taking a penalty his team then has to kill.

The Intangibles

Sixteen seasons, one organisation, and a captaincy through every version of this club. He has taken a reduced role without any of the noise that usually attends one, which is not a small thing.

The projection is straightforward and getting shorter. This is a useful third-line winger who can still play a hard playoff game, on a contract the club has structured around exactly that. The chance share says he should not be given more.
