33 goals and 38 assists in 82 games for 71 points, plus-2, on 18:56 a night, with 11 on the power play and 3 shorthanded.
51.2 per cent at five-on-five, the 64th percentile. The shot chart is the report: a median shot from 19 feet, 53 per cent of them inside 20, and only 8 per cent from beyond 40. At 22 he already shoots from where goals come from.
The Finesse Game
The hockey sense is the elite thing and it arrived fully formed. He finds the soft ice inside the dots without the puck, arrives as it does, and gets the shot away before the goaltender has finished moving. Three consecutive seasons of 24 goals or more starting at 19 is not a fluke of usage.
The release is quick rather than heavy, which suits the distances he shoots from. The playmaking is good and not yet a strength — 38 assists is honest, and he is more dangerous as the man arriving than as the man distributing.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 187, and he goes to the hard areas without having the frame for them yet. He takes punishment at the net front and gives some back, and he has not missed a game in three seasons doing it.
14 penalty minutes says he is disciplined. The strength will come; nothing about his game depends on it arriving.
The Intangibles
A first-round pick who was in the NHL at 19 and has never had a bad month, on a club where he is the fourth-most discussed forward. He kills penalties, plays the last minute of a period either way, and has three 24-goal seasons before his 23rd birthday.
The only real question is the ceiling. A 33-goal, 71-point season on a third-line share of the ice time is either a man who will be a star with more, or a man perfectly optimised for the role he has. The next contract is Dallas’s largest single bet.
