51.7 per cent at five-on-five, the 68th percentile, with on-ice goals of 31-41 against an expected 46-43 — 15 goals of finishing and goaltending removed from a line that was winning its minutes. 7.7 per cent shooting on 194 attempts is roughly half his career rate.
The Finesse Game
Not a skill player and never has been. The release is decent and the volume is high — 194 shots from a fourth-year checking winger is a lot — and 46 per cent of his attempts came from inside 20 feet.
15 goals from that is bad luck rather than decline. 24 assists is a fair return. Everything he produces comes from getting to the front of the net and arriving first on a forecheck.
The Physical Game
5-11 and 199, and he plays a genuinely hard game. He forechecks at speed, finishes checks, blocks shots, and is one of the more reliable defensive forwards in the league.
36 penalty minutes over 82 games is disciplined for the style. The durability is exceptional — six straight seasons above 75 games.
The Intangibles
Two Cups, a decade of being the player every contender wants for a series, and a reputation for being exactly the same in April as in November.
At 33 the projection is a decline in the legs and no change in anything else. 39 points is close to what he is now, and the 15 goals should have been 22.
