49.3 per cent at five-on-five, the 43rd percentile, with on-ice goals of 41-39 against an expected 48-50. The minus-17 is largely a special-teams and empty-net artefact; the five-on-five play was roughly even.
The Finesse Game
The shot volume is the whole offensive engine of this club. 279 attempts in 82 games at 34 is a remarkable rate, and 12.5 per cent conversion is close to his career mark — he shoots from everywhere and about a third of them come from inside 20 feet.
The hands still work in traffic and 32 assists is a fair return on a club that finished 29th in finishing. What has gone is the first step; he no longer separates from a defenceman and now scores by arriving in the right place rather than by beating anybody.
The Physical Game
6 feet and 185, and he plays as though he is a good deal larger. He goes to the net front, initiates contact, and remains one of the more genuinely disliked opponents of his era.
72 penalty minutes at 34 is the second-highest total on the club and the habit has never softened. On a club whose penalty kill finished 23rd, that is a real cost.
The Intangibles
Sixteen seasons, three organisations, a Cup, and a career of being the most useful player nobody wants to play against.
At 34 with 35 goals, the reasonable projection is 25 next season and a decline that arrives suddenly rather than gradually — the game has always depended on effort and volume rather than pace, and volume is the first thing to go.
