48.6 per cent at five-on-five, the 37th percentile, over 1,448 minutes. His on-ice goals were 51-48 against an expected 56-59, which is a roughly even five-on-five season — the minus-38 came almost entirely shorthanded and on the empty net, and it is one of the most misleading ratings in this edition.
The Finesse Game
A genuine shot from the point — 163 attempts and 11 goals is a good return — and a first pass that is quick when he is not pressured.
The decision-making under a forecheck is the recurring problem. He attempts the difficult play at the wrong time and the resulting turnovers happen in his own zone, which is how a defenceman with real tools posts a 37th-percentile share at 24 minutes a night.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 202, and he is willing without being punishing. He defends his net front adequately and takes contact to make a play.
60 penalty minutes over 81 games is a high rate and part of why he is on the ice for so much shorthanded damage.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick, eight seasons in one organisation, and a season played in the middle of persistent trade speculation with a contract expiring.
At 28 the honest reading is a good second-pair defenceman being used as a first, whose rating last season was far worse than his play. Both halves of that sentence matter, and the club has to decide which one it is paying for.
