This Season So Far

The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

8-17-1 in 26 games with an .8752, a 3.49 average and no shutouts, facing 681 shots.

It is the worst save percentage of his career by thirty points and the third consecutive season under .900. He has a career .9080 and 22 shutouts, and none of that is visible in the last four years.

The Physical Game

6-1 and 188 and small for the modern position, which was never a problem when the technique was working. He plays deep and relies on positioning and reads rather than on covering the net with his body.

The lateral recovery is the part that has gone. The second chance across the crease is a goal far more often than it used to be, and behind a club that is 23rd at suppressing chances there are a great many second chances. The rebound control is poor and he does not handle the puck well.

The Mental Game

He posted a .9223 in Colorado in 2020-21 and was a Vezina finalist, signed a six-year contract with Seattle that summer, and has not been the same goaltender since the first month of it.

Four seasons of this is no longer a slump and it is difficult to read the last of them as anything other than a career ending in public.

The Intangibles

A fourth-round pick in 2010 out of Germany and 370 games with a career .9080.

He is 34, the contract has time left on it, and Seattle has a 29-year-old starter signed long. There is no version of the depth chart in which he is the answer to anything.
