48.5 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 36th percentile. His ice went 41-42 against an expectation of 42.88-45.59 — two goals of scoring missing and four fewer conceded, which is a first-line centre whose results were fair.
The Finesse Game
147 attempts at a median of 28 feet with 33 per cent from inside 20, converting at 13.6 per cent. The shot is real without being a weapon.
The skating and the puck retrieval are the two best things. He wins the puck back in the offensive zone as well as any centre here, and 23 assists is thin because the club scored 237 goals and 29th in chance share is where the line played.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 181 and light for the position. He is honest on the forecheck and he is not going to move a defenceman off a puck.
14 penalty minutes in 82 games is among the lowest totals of any regular in this edition. He does not foul, he does not retaliate, and he is trusted on the penalty kill for that reason.
The Intangibles
Second overall in 2021 and a Calder Trophy in 2023, and then a 37-point sophomore season that reset everybody’s expectations downward.
249 games and 146 points at 22. He signed long in the summer of 2024 and he has been asked to be a first-line centre on a club that has not found him a first line.
